Pelvic floor rehabilitation

The pelvic floor is a critically important group of muscles located within every person’s pelvis. These muscles play a critical role in controlling bowel & bladder continence, trunk stability and sexual function. These muscles can be impacted due to a variety of factors including pregnancy, childbirth, slips/falls, trauma, repetitive movements & postures and stress.

Pelvic floor PT can be highly effective in treating:

  • Coccyx pain/coccygodynia
  • Painful intercourse
  • Constipation
  • Levator Ani syndrome
  • Incontinence
  • Pelvic pain
  • Lumbosacral mechanical dysfunction with pelvic pain
  • Hip and groin pain with pelvic pain
  • Vulvar and vaginal pain syndromes
  • Vaginismus
  • Pudendal neuralgia
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Dyspareunia
  • Interstitial cystitis
  • Pelvic floor muscle weakness

To address pelvic floor muscle involvement, it may be necessary- initially and periodically- to perform an internal pelvic floor muscle examination and treatment. This appointment will include a clear description of what to expect using models & diagrams, answering questions and obtaining verbal and written consent. This assessment is performed by observing and/or manually assessing the pelvic floor and perineal region. This evaluation will assess muscle tension, length, strength, endurance, symmetry, scar mobility, skin conditions, vaginal wall laxity and function muscle performance of the pelvic floor region.
